Need to catch up? No problem! Just read Episode 1, Episode 2 and Episode 3 first.

After tallying up the votes from Episode 3 you chose to “Ask nicely.”

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did writing it!

Red Space: Episode 4

There is something odd about this creature that makes the hairs on your neck stand up. Then, you notice something.

It has purple cat-like eyes.

You focus on the eye.

At the center of the vivid purple the dark pupil widens. As it does the reflection of the spear-tip slowly comes into focus and brings you back to your predicament.

“There’s no need to be imposing here,” you think to yourself.

“Get out of dis place, small ears,” says the creature with a thick gruff accent.

“Please, let me pass,” you reply.

“No, we can not. Your kind kill all plants and animals. We lose many good Darnasian family to dis,” says the creature pointing to Lana.

“There have been other humans here?”

“Yes, many ‘umans,” says the Darnasian with a puzzled look. He pauses and continues, “All around dey are ‘ere,” he says pointing around you as if there were hordes of invisible people. ”You bring dem here. We need no more techno-gadgets. Now get out.”

“I am here to help you, to save your planet. It is dying.”

“Cho’ me yer eyes. Alright. I come. I see dem,” says the creature relaxing the grip on his spear dropping it to his side walking close to you.

“The Great Jewels ‘ave spoken of dis for many years. You ‘ave a look dat we say is great power. A power to change da world around you. Because of dis, I let you come. I show you something,” says the Darnasian leader turning around and walking back to the wooden bridge.

You follow behind him when suddenly he stops and turns back to you.

“Your sorcerer in da tower must not be liking dis at all. You stopping his ma-chine… he knows you here already. We must ‘urry. Consult da Great Jewels. I, Defnar, will give you a weapon from computer” says the creature motioning to himself.

As soon as he takes a step on the wooden bridge you see something flicker on and off. For a second you see what looks like the fuzz of a TV screen. It flickers again and the bridge with the entire gulch disapper. Instead you say a large mound of dirt on top of the ground with a hole in it outlined with metal. It seems to be going downward.

You step down on what seems to be metal grated steps. You look down and see a vast cavern below the surface with Darnasian people walking all around on multiple levels.

“My schematics never saw any of this. Something is generating a large quantity of energy to support this system,” you hear Lana say behind you.

You follow Defnar into a metal room where a large screen is on the wall.

For a moment you wonder if this may have come from Earth, but do not see any model or make on it.

“Dis your computer,” says Defnar pointing at the screen. “We make weapons.”

“Did humans make this?” you ask.

“Yes,” he says. He then walks up to the large wall-fitting monitor and you hear him whisper, “You need to work.” Turning back around he smiles at you and then walks to the center of the room looking at the computer.

“Com-pu-ter!” yells the Darnasian.

You see the screen flicker on and a radio wave pulse to the rhythm of his word as if in an echo.

“Wea-pons!”

Again the radio wave flickers. He turns back towards you and smiles.

“It’s working. Very good.”

He turns back to the screen.

“Make a weapon for dis… ‘uman!”

Defnar sighs and turns back to you and mumbles rather audibly, “I sure hope this works,” then looks up at you again, gives a toothy grin, sharply turns and leaves the room.

“Lana, what do you make of all of this?” you ask.

“I’m running schematics right now and sense a very strong biological and digital presence down here both from these people and a seperate source. I’m not sure where the other source is.”

You walk inside a large room filled with all kinds of weaponry, armor and one-man transports. In the center you see an equally large table which you seem to be walking towards.

The closer you get to it, you begin to see that the top of this table is made of some sort of liquid.

You watch as the center of the table swirls and forms into a small sphere. Instantly it hardens and takes shape in the form of what seems to be a grenade.

“Ah, a G-Bomb. Dat is a good one. It hears your thoughts. You throw it. It goes to enemy and… boom. Is very good. We use for hunting,” Defnar motions to the hand-grenade.

In the corner of your eye, on the far side of the room, near an exit, you see a figure moving to one of the many weapons on the ground. When you turn, expecting for it to be a Darnasian you see that it is hooded and cloaked. Instantly you recognize who it is and jerk in surprise.

Defnar looks to you and then to the cloaked figure. “Da sorcerer!” Defnar yells. “Get him!”

The figure with one quick movement picks up a weapon nearby and spins, his robes whirling around him like a pin-wheel, and jumps on top one of the transports. Within a blink, you hear the roar of the engine and see the transport bolt out of the door.

You watch as Defnar throws the spear and notice a transport next to him that you could easily get to and chase after the robed figure.

So, what do you do?

A. Steal the transport and follow him.
B. Throw a G-Bomb

After tallying up the votes from last week you chose to “Leave this place.”

Itching to see what happens next? I bet you are!

Red Space: Episode 3

“I appreciate the offer, but no thank you,” you say while giving the rod back to Lana. “We will be leaving now,” you add.

You try, but can’t see the reaction under the hood of this mysterious thing.

The old adage ”ignorance is bliss” goes through your mind as you take steps backwards from the tower and slowly turn away.

“This is a mistake,” you hear the ominous voice say from behind you.

You ignore the comment and continue walking.

After walking several hundred yards and hearing loud metal clangs, grinding and what almost sounds like welding from Lana you turn to her quizzically and examine the spherical robot. You’re not quite sure what could be making all of the fuss.

Perplexed by everything going on you decide it’s time to get some more answers.

“When is it supposed to happen? The whole world dying thing. And why do I care?” you ask.

“I am not programmed with human emotions and do not fully understand the word care. I am simply here to assist you in your mission, 2-1-3-7-1-1-1. You have 24 hours to stop this world from dying,” answered Lana in her soft rhythmic tone.

“I see. So, that’s it?”

“No, that is not it,” says Lana as a metal door slides up on the midsection of the sphere.

The gears shift as the long arm of the robot reaches inside the small shaft.

“I have made some upgrades to your weaponry,” says Lana as she reveals a sleek looking gun.

She hands it to you as light reflects off of the polished surface.

“Wow, impressive,” you say as you take the weapon. You notice that the handle looks the same as the rod that she had given to you earlier. “And resourceful. Very nice.”

Satisfied for now, you continue walking again. You figure that you may as well go to the only other place that you can see – the mountains.

After about an hour you see movement in the distance.

“What’s going on up there, Lana?”

“Their biological signs show an increase in heat output. This usually means alertness, perhaps aggressiveness.”

You continue walking towards them and can now see them very well. There are four total, two standing on each side of what looks like a wooden bridge over top of a deep gulch.

They stand about seven feet tall with light purple skin and long slender features with equally long spear-like weapons. You first notice the rabbit like ears atop their heads and bone-white manes that come around to the mid of their chest like long straight hair.

You’re probably 20 feet away when one of them points its spear at you and the other three follow suit.

“Stop,” you hear one of them say.

So, what do you do?

A. “Negotiate” with your Gun
B. Ask nicely

Red Space: Episode 2

Your death.

Bright red blood.

You remember it so vividly.

“These day dreams are happening more often,” you say to yourself as you continue walking.

“These images are side-effects of entering the program. It seems your amnesia still has not worn off,” Lana says calmly.

You’ve been walking for miles and are startled when you see the first bit of life here.

A creature scurries in front of you.

You can’t quite make out what the creature is, but it looks like a cross between a lizard and a rat.

You make note of the reptilian and mammal-like qualities of the creature – scales and fur while it is perched on top a cluster of small rocks.

Suddenly the flat rocks snap up and make a loud, “pop!” where the small creature used to be. A huge poof of dust comes up like a miniature mushroom cloud and you hear the sound of rock grinding on rock.

You stand there both in shock and awe for several minutes and then continue on your way perhaps with a bit more caution.

Before you is the dirt tower that you saw from the distance. Its sheer grandness, although primative, reminds you a bit of the pyramids back home on Earth.

At the base of the immense tower you see several large circular holes that are perhaps doorways. The structure looks as if it were built by giant insect-like creatures.

Suddenly you feel as if there is a presence nearby – like something is looking at you.

Your eyes scan the area and stop at a four foot lump that looks like four pillars of rock that all curl up and connect to a rocky sphere-like shape at its peak.

When you continue watching you see the round mass turn towards you with two large white eyes and two fat lips curling up revealing rows of serrated shark-like teeth.

The pillars which you now understand to be legs slowly bend down with animal-like movements like a cat that is about to pounce.

“Hey Lana, you got any lazer guns or anything? I think this thing wants to fight,” you ask.

The creature continues moving towards you, its skin changing from rough and bumpy to sleek and smooth and changes to a yellow-ish brown color. Its body expands and you hear the sound of wind being sucked in.

“I do have a few pieces of the tele-pod with me,” Lana says with her calm voice.

With perfect balance the creature stands up on one of its legs cocks its head to the side staring at you. Its eyes open widely at you and opens its fat lips again showing off its sharp teeth.

“Something is better than nothing. This thing wants to fight,” you say.

Click to tweet: ”Something is better than nothing. This thing wants a fight.”

Lana hands you a metal rod and you grip it in your hands.

The creature jumps at you with alarming speed. You spin out of the way while the creature is still in mid-air and swing the metal rod connecting with one of its legs seperating the apendage from its body with ease.

It turns and stands up on another of its legs as dark yellow liquid splurts from its major wound and jumps towards you again. Its long talons are now inches away from your face.

With lightning-like speed you pull your face away and hop back. The muscles in your arms stretch to their full extension as you pull back with the metal rod. Your muscles ripple and flex as you come down on the creature with strength you never knew you had.

A metallic “Ping!” rings in the air as you connect with your target, only a mist of yellowish liquid remains in the air.

Seconds later you hear the creature fall in the distance.

Surprisingly you hear the echoe of a male voice from one of the cave entrances.

“Ah, I knew you would come here. You made good work of that Veskin,” says the voice.

From the cave entrance a humanoid figure walks out, hooded and cloaked in a black robe. You can not see its face, but only its long white hair that is coming from the dark opening of the hood.

“Who are you?” you ask.

“I am Miles. I knew you were coming for me. It’s a pleasure to meet one of your kind,” says the ominous figure.

“How did you know that I was coming here? What is this place?” you say while tapping the rod.

“Never mind that. First things first. You must do something for me and I will answer your questions. I’m sure you have many.”

“What do you mean?”

“That robot… it must be destroyed. It can not be trusted. Give me the robot and I will destroy it properly. Then I will answer your questions,” says the figure.

So, what do you do?

A. Give him the Robot to destroy properly.
B. “Destroy” the Robot yourself.
C. Leave this place.

What is Red Space?

Do you have any ideas yet?

Well, there were some very interesting speculations concerning Lana and the Tower. (Click here if you missed Episode 1.) You will find them below.

First, let’s take a look at where you’re going…

After compiling the votes…

You will be going to the Tower next - better hope that was the right choice!

So, there’s some speculation about some aspects of what’s happened so far. Let me know in the comments down below if you agree or not.

Here’s the first comment that really started the discussion.

I voted for option 2…heading for the tower. Too suspicious of LANA right now. – Raymond Terry

I thought the suspicion of Lana was very interesting. But, come on, Lana’s a nice little robot! :-)

For me it was a consideration that a tower, even a dirt tower, was more likely to have supplies that I might need for my journey. All I’ve got right now is a set of goggles. It would also give me some time to fix my memory before getting into the thick of things, which any commanding officer should consider important. – William Altman

I love seeing this degree of thought! More please!

A. Go to the mountains (I’m afraid I’ll be the next ash pile if I don’t) – Tab

Let’s hope you’re not right, because you’re heading to the Tower!

I’ll see you Monday to find out what happens next!

If you haven’t already subscribed, please do so below. It’s easy and only takes 2 minutes. :-)

An “Uhh,” utters from your mouth as you click on the notification.

The email pops up and looks like nothing you’ve seen before.

Assignment Summons

Special Operative 2137111

Your expertise is in great need. We are unable to go through the proper protocol to re-introduce you back into the system.

Further details will be given by 89LANA24 once the jump is complete.

“What the-” you begin to say, when suddenly your voice box stops working.

Your eyes burn and tear up as you see petabytes of computer code stream through your vision and begin to fixate on three lines that say:

“Initiating jump sequence.

Loading Summons.

Deploying 2137111″

You wonder, “Did I black out?”

A warm female voice says, “Operative 2-1-3-7-1-1-1, I am 8-9-L-A-N-A-2-4, artificial intelligence, here to assist you in your mission. My master said you may call me Lana.”

“And who is your master? Seriously, is this some trick?” you say as a small slit of dull red light peers at the base of your feet as if at the bottom of a door. Slowly you can hear the a wisp of air as the red light grows and reveals a very large, red planet.

“Holy-”

Cutting you off, Lana says, “I am not able to speak to you about who my master is. You are not authorized to handle that information.”

You are shocked as flames are now licking outside around you like some sort of starving hell beast. “What is this?”

“You were not administered your mission details? Your amnesia must still be in effect. Do not be afraid. It will begin to wear off soon. Your mission is to stop this planet from dying. My master told me to give you these.”

You see movement to your right of a mechanical arm attached to a floating metal globe. It hands you a set of goggles.

“Please put this on.”

The red light is already giving you a headache and you quickly put the goggles on. After a few seconds your eyes readjust to the red light outside and like magic the red light slowly vanishes. Oddly enough it looks like Earth. The only difference is the lack of life.

You’re not sure how you didn’t feel it, but you have landed. The transparent door opens allowing you to see the dry, flat arid plains of this alien world.

For a moment you notice you’re breathing the air and panic.

“Please relax, 2-1-3-7-1-1-1. The air here is exactly the same as Earth. Please step out of the pod. I must dismantle it.”

You step out onto the dry ground and immediately notice that you feel much lighter. To the left you see large tall mountains in the distance

“The mountains are where we need to begin,” says the robot as you hear and see pieces of the ship being ripped and torn apart.

You look to the right and see a dark spiraling tower which seems to be made of dirt. It must be very tall, as it is quite a ways away.

In the darkness of the mound you catch movement and soon realize that a human-looking figure is running towards you. Faintly you hear it yelling out, “Your machine is lying to you!” Hey! Don’t go to the mountains! That machine is-”

Before it finishes, there is a flash of blinding light. You close your eyes automatically and open them only to see ash where the figure was. You see the beam of light slowly diminish from the distance of the mountains.

Your eyes focus back to the pile of ash as smoke rises from it.

Lana speaks up. “I suggest that we get to those mountains quickly.”

So, what do you do?
A. Go to the mountains.
B. Go towards the tower.

You asked for interesting henchman to use for your game.

Well, here you go.

This is not your standard one-dimensional NPC that peeks his head out from behind the curtain, nor is he the in-your-face type.

So, what makes him interesting?

He doesn’t hide that dark part that people try to keep to themselves. In fact he is quite demented in many regards, but here is the key:

When you understand his background…

You will have a sense of compassion for this man.

Jehu Olan was created to make you ask yourself one question

Would you be a henchman if you had nothing to live for, but yourself? Click to Tweet

In fact, if you have a minute, I want you to answer that question in the comment section below please! :-)

You may be asking, why or how could anyone get to this place? Let’s take a look.

Occupation

Mercenary

Appearance

Race: Human

Age: 52

Sex: M

Height: 5’10″

Weight: 245 lbs.

Description: Salt-n-Pepper Brown hair and dark hazel eyes. He wears his old military helm.

Background

Jehu is a bit jaded as he is ex-military. After losing his wife and children, he tried to get back into the military; however, he was only told that he was a “worthless old man.”

Many years he secluded himself and lost touch with reality, but after bandits destroyed his house and stole his remaining possessions, Jehu took to the streets. After this he realized he should get into self-employment and pick back up with his long lost love – killing.

Motivation

Selfish - He lives for himself and has no respect for life.

Bloodlust – He impatiently waits for the next battle.

Disposition

Very sarcastic and looks on the darker side of life.

He rarely smiles and never laughs.

“Fighting for things like honor or love are a waste of my time.” - Jehu Olan

Weapon of Choice

Sword and Shield

Skills

Sword

Shield

Negotiation

Quirks

He constantly bites the inside of his mouth.

Snorts and spits.

Curses loudly and often.

3 Tips for Using Jehu Olan

Concentrate on the Quirks while playing this character.

Reminder – he is a henchman not because of loyalty, but of survival and to fulfill his lust for battle.

Try using the picture. You can find it here.

Obviously when you think about role playing games you think about the father of them all – Dungeons & Dragons.

Many people already have the notion that there is no rpg unless there are dungeons.

This doesn’t mean that dungeons are necessary. In fact, there can be quite a divide as to people that find dungeon crawls fun and not-so-much-fun.

What greater way to see if you like dungeons than to play in one?

Exactly.

Here are 10 tips for creating a dungeon. Enjoy the video. It was made with love just for you! :-)

10 Tips for Building a Dungeon: (video)

Recap:

Purpose – The most important! The entirety of the dungeon must have a purpose

Inhabitant’s Relationships – Resources (food, water, shelter) could bring these together. Peace or at war?

Size – Small vs. Super Ridiculously Large

Complexity – Secret Rooms/ Hallways? Multiple Layers? Magic?

Puzzles/ Traps – Don’t overboard here. Make puzzles optional, a challenge, and not ridiculously difficult.

Contents – Don’t be limited to just “treasure.” What do the inhabitants use?

Grid – Be aware of the dimensions of things and show them accordingly.

Battle -Don’t feel like you have to be in battle throughout the entire dungeon. (unless this is what you and your players enjoy, then obviously go for it)

Interesting Design – Who built this? What were they thinking when they built it? Is this a natural cavern?

Surprise – No one likes to be able to figure out what’s going to happen next.

You’re a gamer. You love hearing, reading, writing, talking and everything that has to do with gaming.

That is why I have gotten together a panel to answer all of those RPG Development questions for you.

I know what you’re thinking…

That’s frickin’ awesome!

Well, I say this – you’re dag on right it’s frickin’ awesome!

Let’s get to the point – the details.

RPG Q&A Info

When is it?

Mark your calendar for March 15th, 2012 9PM EST. It will be an hour long session.

Who’s gonna be there?

Christopher LaHaise, Kyrinn S. Eis, Clash Bowley, Ben Gerber, David Hill (possibly Greg Christopher) and, of course, you will be there.

What’s gonna happen?

You get to ask whatever developmental question you’ve ever had, and the mighty panel will answer!

Where is it?

Jodi Black will graciously be hosting at Beautiful Brains Online.

Why are we doing this?

Because you know you always want more! :-)

How is this going down?

Via chat you will ask a question and then the panel will respond. You know, kinda like a Q&A? :-P

So, now what?

Help promote.

If you have gamer friends, email them. Twitter them. Punch them right in their Facebook! Circle your hands around their necks on Google+! (Hey, sometimes brute force simply works best. This is a joke. Please don’t literally wring your friend’s necks.)

Further, leave me a comment if you’d like to help out.

If you can’t help, I understand. Make sure to subscribe below for future updates!
